The Program

Training for Intervention Procedures

TIPS is the internationally recognized gold standard in responsible alcohol service. The primary class is a four to five hour On-Premise program that teaches graduates to recognize warning signs, intervene effectively, and serve responsibly.

With support from the Wyoming Liquor Division, WSLA provides free TIPS training manuals and materials for Wyoming trainers — provided the training is free to students. Contact Mike Moser at moser@wyoliquor.org for more information.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about WSLA's free TIPS training materials, becoming a certified trainer, and finding classes in your area.

The WSLA supplies TIPS training manuals to certified trainers free of charge. We provide manuals for two curriculums: On-Premise (for all retail on and off-premise employees) and Concessions (focused on events or venues with volunteers or sellers dealing with alcohol).

There are a few conditions: Classes must be free to students — it’s fine if someone pays a trainer, but students should have no out-of-pocket expense. We send manuals as needed based on your training track record. These manuals are expensive, so we prefer multiple smaller shipments to ensure they’re being used effectively.

Before the pandemic, becoming a trainer required attending a two-day in-person seminar. Now, that training is available online at gettips.com. Look for a workshop for the "TIPS Commercial" curriculum. The first-time cost is $499, with an annual renewal fee of $75 per 18 months.

There are currently 56 certified TIPS trainers across Wyoming. If you live outside an area with current trainers, consider having someone on staff become certified, or pooling together with other liquor establishments to share a trainer.

It’s best to have someone comfortable presenting to groups (they’ll be leading a 3-4 hour class) and someone with knowledge of the liquor industry. We provide resources including legal information outlining Wyoming law to support trainers.

The statewide TIPS program has been suspended due to state budgetary cuts. However, local TIPS classes are still being conducted around Wyoming. Call the WSLA office at 307-634-6484 for the most current information about classes in your area.

Contact Mike Moser at the WSLA office: moser@wyoliquor.org or 307-634-6484. He can help with questions about training materials, finding trainers in your area, or the process of becoming a certified TIPS trainer.
